February of this year I helped create Midwest Craft Con, a 3 day craft retreat hosted in the city I have called home for over 2 decades. Gathering up a group of like minded peers for a long weekend seemed like a dream come true and I wanted to find a unique way to highlight the shops and the handmade community which makes Columbus, Ohio so amazing. While we were able to showcase the local retail talent on blog posts, see City Guide to Columbus and City Guide 2, there is nothing like experiencing walking into shops like Wholly Craft or Igloo Letterpress and getting first hand insight as to what makes these independent retailers so charming. With some logistical planning we were able to shuttle 22 makers from all over the Midwest to 5 of these DIY haunts. Giving them a bottle of bubbly and a personalized tour of just how cool Columbus can be.
But why limit this to just out of towners? Why not continue a DIY shopping experience with locals? Why not host this a few times a year and continue to create a new way of shopping and craft comradery?
We embark on our next Craft Caravan on Saturday October 15th from 11am-4pm. Passengers will experience DIY stops at Robert Mason Co., Igloo Letterpress, Yarn It & Haberdashery and The Smithery. We will keep you nourished with local snacks and brews along the way. You will also get crafty with a make & take experience at The Smithery, where riders will create a custom keychain or charm. All materials and supplies are included in the $65 passenger fee. We ride rain or shine courtesy of The Bexley Beat.
More dates and destinations will be added as the holiday season approaches.
